Honorable Mention
Sandwiches
Didi Menendez

Que facil la tenia papi.
Cuando se queria olvidar de sus responsibilidades,
se volvia loco.

My mother has forgotten how to make sandwiches.

She has forgotten other things too,
but forgetting
how to make a sandwich
is the straw -

Mother's back is broken-
not by her daughters
stepping on cracks -

La factoria
lunes a sabados
inhaling all those threads
hunched over
a singer sewing machine.

Monday through Saturday
she'd brown bag sandwiches
for me, my sister, for her
and for papi
when he was not crazy
and holding a job-

Once as a dishwasher -
Those were the times he was sane.
Who could blame him for choosing to be crazy?
Wouldn't you rather be crazy than washing dishes?

Sandwiches made of tuna
or Sweet Ham and Swiss.
Brown bags taken on the bus-
the weight of a dead canary.

My mother has forgotten how to make sandwiches.

She also forgot other things
such as how the autopsy revealed
peanut butter and jam on white
stuck in the esophagus of my father.
